DANDA #011 — CourseTrack: AI Agents to End College Dropout Chaos

Every year, millions of students start college full of ambition but leave without a diploma. The problem isn't just tuition or academic rigor—it's a maelstrom of confusing requirements, poor advising, missed deadlines, and administrative logjams. Colleges, especially large public institutions, struggle to guide each student through hundreds of degree pathways and requirements. Many students fall off track and don't realize it until it's too late.

The problem

Only 62% of students at U.S. four-year institutions graduate within six years. Among first-generation and low-income students, the rate drops below 50%. Each year, over 1.3 million students drop out without a degree, leaving behind $3.8 billion in unused Pell Grants and billions more in lost earnings. Most students report confusion about degree requirements, deadlines, and course sequencing. The idea: CourseTrack

CourseTrack is an AI agent for college students that acts as an always-on, personalized graduation navigator. It ingests the student's real transcript, registered courses, degree audit, and campus deadlines. Every day, it checks requirement progress, deadline status, prerequisite chains, and even financial aid flags. It proactively alerts students (and optionally, advisors) to missing requirements, risky course loads, and approaching deadlines. The agent drafts emails, fills forms, suggests course swaps, and even books meetings with human advisors for edge cases. The magic: students never get caught off guard by a dropped requirement, missed prerequisite, or unnoticed registration hold.

Architecture

The student’s real academic data flows in from campus systems via secure API or OCR. The ingestion engine cleans and normalizes messy, unstructured degree audits and transcripts. The Student Graph layer encodes program requirements, tracks every fulfilled/remaining item, and models risk (missed courses, overloads, holds). The AI Orchestrator constantly reasons over deadlines, identifies at-risk situations, and triggers actions. Routine cases route directly to the Action Layer, which communicates with students, drafts forms, and schedules. Edge cases are routed via the Human Gate to an advisor. This orchestrated flow means students get proactive, personalized guidance—before things slip through the cracks.

Wedge: Start with integrations at 2-3 large public universities (where student:advisor ratios are worst). First use-case: proactive deadline & requirement alerts for juniors and seniors in high-dropout majors (STEM, first-gen).
