DANDA #074 — TuneAudit: AI Agents to End Music Royalty Payment Errors for Indie Artists

The modern indie musician faces a paradox: more ways to distribute music than ever before, and yet a persistent black hole when it comes to actually getting paid fairly. Royalty payments are a maze — metadata errors, unclaimed rights, and opaque reporting systems mean billions slip through the cracks. Every year, independent creators lose out, and entire careers are stunted by the unpredictability of income and lack of transparency.

The problem

There are over 8 million music creators globally releasing tracks on streaming platforms. In the U.S. alone, recorded music revenue hit $17.1 billion in 2023, driven largely by streaming. Yet, it's estimated that $655 million in U.S. music royalties go unclaimed or misallocated annually, with much of that impacting indie artists and small rights-holders (sources below). The root causes: inaccurate metadata, fragmented rights databases, opaque payment audits, and lagging claims processes. Indie artists often lack the legal muscle or technical know-how to audit or dispute these losses. For many, 20%-40% of their potential streaming income vanishes into the system — or worse, gets paid to the wrong party.

The idea: TuneAudit

TuneAudit is an autonomous AI agent platform that plugs into streaming platform dashboards, digital distributors, and public rights databases to continuously audit, reconcile, and recover missing or misallocated royalties for independent musicians and rights-holders. It automates the detection of payment anomalies, missing tracks, metadata mismatches, and proactively files recovery claims — with human-in-the-loop review for dispute escalation. The result: more money, faster, and with less stress for the creators fueling the music industry.

Data from artist dashboards, royalty reports, and digital service provider (DSP) APIs flow into the Ingestion layer, which parses and normalizes disparate formats. This feeds into the Memory/Graph, a persistent store linking track metadata, rights, and historical royalty payments. The Agent Orchestrator continuously analyzes for anomalies — missing payments, unclaimed royalties, metadata mismatches — and triggers agentic workflows. If recovery or dispute is needed, the Human Gate presents suggested actions for creator review before pushing to the Action Layer, which generates claims, initiates corrections, and updates reporting. Feedback and outcomes are looped back to refine accuracy and learning.

Why now

The explosion of indie releases and AI-generated music has made legacy payment systems even less reliable — while advances in AI agents, cross-platform APIs, and rights data standards make it possible to automate what was once impossible. Musicians demand transparency, and the industry is under pressure to fix the broken royalty pipeline. The tools now exist to win back trust — and revenue — for the artists who fuel the streaming era.
