What Microsoft Should Steal Next: Eval-Driven Copilot, Real Tool Servers, and Agentic Iteration

Copilot’s autocomplete superpowers have set the bar, but Anthropic’s Claude and OpenAI’s GPT-5 are redefining what developer AI can be. The key? Eval-driven, agentic iteration. Engineers don’t want a code copilot that just spits out possible completions—they want a partner that plans, acts, verifies, and fixes. Microsoft should move fast to build native support for agentic workflows and loop engineering directly into Copilot and Azure AI Studio.

Spec Prompting and Tool Servers: Not Just Plugins

Right now, the best devs wire Claude Code or GPT agents to spec-driven prompts and tightly integrated MCP tool servers—so the AI uses actual project test runners, custom compilers, and internal APIs, not just off-the-shelf plugins. Microsoft’s plugin ecosystem is huge, but too shallow. We need real tool servers with versioning, security, and permissioning, natively inside Copilot workflows.

Eval-First Dev and Continuous Test Loops

OpenAI and Anthropic have proven that shipping new features safely requires continuous evaluation loops—every agentic code change is automatically tested, benchmarked, and only merged if it passes. Microsoft has the infra (Azure Pipelines, GitHub Actions), but doesn’t glue it together for agentic AI by default. The opportunity: make eval loops a first-class primitive in Copilot Workspaces and Azure ML.

Why does this matter? Because devs want to ship AI that doesn’t just "work"—it proves it. If Microsoft doesn’t close the loop, serious teams will keep defecting to the labs that do. The future is agentic, eval-first, and tool-native. Time for Microsoft to build—not just partner.
